Become a Shut Up & Write! Organizer
Shut Up & Write! organizers host free, recurring writing sessions in their communities. If you want to create a welcoming space where writers can show up and write together — without teaching, grading, or running a workshop — this is for you. No experience is necessary.
What Organizers Do
As an organizer, you facilitate the Shut Up & Write! method at a regular time and place. That means:
- Choosing a venue (a café, library, or community space) and setting a recurring schedule
- Welcoming writers and leading a brief round of introductions
- Facilitating the writing block — keeping the environment quiet and focused
- Maintaining a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere
- Listing your sessions on the Shut Up & Write! platform so writers can find and RSVP
You do not need to be a writing teacher, a published author, or an expert of any kind. The format does the heavy lifting — your role is to show up consistently and hold the space.
What the Commitment Looks Like
Most organizers spend fewer than two hours per week, including the session itself. Because the format is simple and repeatable, there is very little preparation involved. You do not need to plan activities, create materials, or manage a large group. Many sessions have between 3 and 15 attendees.
Why Organize with Shut Up & Write!?
- Support your own writing. Running a group gives you a regular writing appointment that you are accountable to — organizers often say their own writing improves the most.
- Support others without teaching. You create the conditions for others to write without needing to instruct, evaluate, or mentor.
- Join a shared practice. You become part of a global network of organizers using the same format, with access to resources, guides, and community support.
- Keep it simple. The format is designed to be sustainable long-term. No burnout, no escalating commitments.
